The above image for a VCO is from the Synergy Microwave Corp patent 7088189 by Rohde, Rebel, and Poddar for Integrated Low Noise Microwave Wideband Push-Push VCO. (Ulrich Rohde, N1UL, and Ajay K. Poddar, AC2KG ). A corresponding photograph appears in the book as "Figure 5-9 Example of the 1.5-4.5 GHz VCO with coupled resonators" on page 76.
I will never fully digest this extensive design book. In addition to design steps, the example schematics give sufficient detail to jump into working Spice simulations. The slides below present preliminary simulation results. for some of these examples. My primary interest was in the frequency doubling push-push configuration.
Much of the material can also be found in Chapter 10 - Oscillators, in the second edition of Microwave Circuit Design Using Linear and Nonlinear Techniques by Vendelin, Pavio and Rohde (2005).
The Appendices -A through -D contain detailed design steps and examples. Appendices -F and -H give details of noise analysis.
